Music Magazine Questionnaire Results

Analysing my results I noticed that the majority of respondents where male and aged between 13-16 and 17-21 but with the most popular results were with the 13-16 years olds. I then noticed that most of my respondents buy up to 12 music magazines a year with them buying one once a moth but the most popular answer was people buying music magazines around 5 or 6 times a year.I then looked at representation and their current occupation, the majority of people asked where students but very few had a  full time occupation, as 3 people were of this description. I then asked 'what genres of music do you prefer listening too' in which i got a wide variety of results. Most of the people asked preferred pop music, but in a close second was metal and then indie and R 'N' B. I then asked about existing music magazines and what ones they like and why. The Most popular choice of music magazine was Kerrang because of the original name and the styles used on the front cover to entice the reader. People were also asked how much they'd be willing to spend on a new music magazine and the results were as follows. The most popular price with the respondents was between £1-£2 and only a few were willing to spend more than this. Finally I asked how often they would like the magazine to be issued and the results were that they would prefer to be able to buy the magazine monthly.

Coursework Evaluation: Skills Development

I feel asthough I have improved upon my audience research in comparison with my preliminary task whereby I just put what I wanted to see in the magazine rather than the target audience.

Coursework Evaluation: Technologies

Overall, I feel that I have improved upon how to successfully add incorporate images into my final products without having a harsh outline. My magazine required images with a soft edge to them; in order to do this I erased a fine edge using a soft eraser. This went well with the magazine’s dark background because it gave a look like the image was blending in with it.

Coursework Evaluation: Addressing My Audience

I had to choose very carefully about the way in which I was going to communicate to the Goths. Stereotypically, Goths don’t tend to be the type of group that tell jokes and have a laugh. After I conducted my audience research on Goths, it turned out that the stereotyping was correct. So I used fairly simple language, nothing very dark and complicated. But, I was also careful not to make any opinions too biased, so that I am not influencing an audience opinion

Coursework Evaluation: Target Audience

As obvious as it is, my target audience is directed at Emos and Grungers. They both tend to be male or female but mainly male, between the ages of 15 and 30, mostly students from school or college/university where they also hang out as well as on the streets. Emos are individualists who do not aspire to be a part of the mainstream society and people often think they have an attiude and don't follow rules and authority. They wear mostly black and/or dark themed clothing and listen to heavy metal or harcore/ screamo music. Other than the different taste in music and clothing, they are not all that different from the general public. They tend to spend their money on the numerous metal bands such as “Avenged Sevenfold” and “Alexisonfire”, so the producing companies for these bands may want to advertise their merchandise.

Cpursework Evaluation: Institutions

There are advantages and disadvantages for getting the magazine distributed with a large and a small time publisher.

The big-time publishers can get the magazine published and distributed within a large area, which is good considering you will have a wider audience and plenty of income. However, it also has the downside, a big-time publisher, such as Bauer, will ask for a lot of money to publish it to such a wide area, but with a larger income it may be much more possible to maintain the income and outcome of money. Not to mention the possibility for selling advertising space. If I were to publish my magazine with a company like Bauer, I would have more business with advertisers because their products would be advertised in a wider area, so more money would come in to pay for the distribution.

On the other hand, a small time publisher (like with a fanzine) would be cheaper. I would have to pay less money to get my magazine published and distributed but to a small area. To get my magazine published to a smaller area, means that I would have a smaller audience and thus less money coming in from both the audience and possible advertisers. People looking to advertise don’t want to go to a magazine that isn’t well known to advertise because people would be less likely to read it and therefore not likely to look at the adverts.

So in comparison, it would be much more profitable and beneficial to go with a big-time publisher where my magazine can be distributed to a larger area/audience and a greater income from companies, willing to may more to advertise their products in a well-known magazine.

Coursework Evaluation: Representation

I chose to address Metal Heads in a manner in which they speak; casually but not to a humorous extent as I found that Head Bangers or metal fans generally aren’t the kind of people who make jokes a lot. As I explained earlier, I used two different fonts to represent Metal music lovers; however, I have not used two different ways of communicating with them. In order to get the youth culture to take in the info and news that are inside the magazine, I needed to make fonts and language clear and easy to understand. It was easy to make the text clear, seeing as I used a completely black background; I needed to merely use gothic text to make it stand out among other things. Language, however, was a challenge. I had to think like a Grunger and an allround metal music lover to talk like one too, not the easiest thing in the world. After completing my audience research, I found that all I needed to do was talk casually, which was rather unusual considering the stereotype.

In my photographs, as I said earlier, the people are not smiling; they are either giving a wierd stances and looking directly at the camera which could show attitude. This could also connote the sinister attitude and the deviation from social norms, but they are actually looking at the camera. emos and metal fans also seem to think of themselves as superior to some others, I attempted to represent this by using a few low angled shots to make them look taller and larger than life and have used an education setting to represent the social class and age.

Finding an emo or metal fan is resonably easy because of what they wear. They often wear black, often black t-shirts with an artistic/ band on the front. What is highly unusual about my front cover image is how the youth is represtented by using younger people in the pictures which fits in well because the bands themselves are usually younger in this genre.

I think I more reinforced the stereotypical metal and emos than undermined it. Using images which connote and denote all of these things to do with clothing, attitude and music, through the camera angles used in the pictures, fonts and styles used in the making of the magazine and using people that correspond to this genre.

Coursework Evaluation: Forms and Conventions

My music magazine is genre specific towards metal lover and in particular the hardcore metal genre which isn't featured much in the existing music magazines. They layout of the magazine, itself, isn’t representative of the youth culture, but the colour scheme is. Blacks along with reds and silvery colours are some of the key signifiers and key colours in the culture of metal listeners. Secondary colours include yellows and whites. The secondary colours are used in my magazine to highlight key features and to make at times  my magazine stand out. The black and is linked in with my Masthead ' Metal Core' by adding reds na dother coulours around the masterhead it helps it to back up the signifiers of metal culture straight away as they look at the title of my magazine. I used some white text to highlight the key words in my cover lines and to make the text in my double-page spread and contents page stand out so that it may be read clearly and to a good standard. The words 'Metal Core' are used as a pun, play on words, of the genre of hardcore and metal, mixing the two words together and it also connotes the tempo of the music; fast and quick drum beats along with guitar solos and above all screaming are used throughout the songs and are often described as rage and heavyness of the music. I tried to focus my text around tone solid font. It being a gothic type font given it the impression that this magazines is different and backs up the genre as awhole.. One type tends to be very fancy and almost erotic in their lifestyle whereas the other tends to be very hardcore and closely linked to the magazine.

My photographs were a challenge to take because I had to think closely about the nature people who might be reading my magazine, like some goths, skaters, metal heads, moshers etc, so i had t o appeal towards all of them and the composition of lighting and backgrounds. The person in the image is four guys who look kind of rebellious and have no rulesin which to follow which could be used to connote their attitude and disrespect for authority.  Instead I tried to get them being very casual, not smiling which them in certain poses and with facial reactions and in areas where they tend to “hang-out" and 'cause trouble'. So I chose to take some of my photos in the corridors of the college to connote their age and their social class along with tying it into there education or lack of it.
I tried to make the double page spread a fairly simple but fairly traditional layout for a metal magazine, like existing ones, for example 'Kerrang'.I made sure it stuck with some of the obvious hardcore elements like for example the metal magazine 'Metalhammer'. I added these hardcore almost powerful elements to my magazine because I tried to represent their personality of the audience and bands rather than their appearance but most of the hardcore elements were required to represent the music.

The layout of the double page spread was nothing really special except for the extremely narrow gutters and the larger heading at the top of the page to tell the reader what the . However, the position of the pull quotes is fairly unusual

For my contents page i decide to have the text down the left hand side of the page with the contents on the right , in order for the reader to read that bit first and understand what my magazine is about and where it cam from. I included poictures down the far right to help show the audience what was featured in my magazine, as I found this a typical feature of music magazines in the ones I studied. I also featured my date and magazine masthead at the top of the contents page, as this i felt was another common feature in music magazines. I began i use the same colours and style in layout as to my title page, which helped to back up my genre and influence my audeince. My choice to include a piece written from the editorial team was taken from many example of magazines i had previously studied and as it was a relatively new magazine, on a focussed genre i thought i needed that peice to relate to the audience. The contents page has a similar layout to NME music magazine. I used this layout to add more of a hardcore feel to it. I used the magazine slogan on the front cover 'It's metal, it's hardocre metal' to carry on the house style. The house style, itself, is hardcore, black/red/ silver/ white, non-serif/serif font  and gothic fonts and lots of bolf fonts and heavy fonts to connote the gnere. So I have made use of real magazines and altered their colour scheme and layout to make my own music magazine.
